So i broke my ankle onboard a twin trawler. I was working on upper deck when they started pulling the trawl back, so i hurried below to help the mate. I make it to the stairs with no problem, but thats when it starts to go wrong. I all went really fast, so I dont know exactly what happened. But i started walking down the stairs, and the next thing i know is that i am lying on the banner below, and my foot is killing me. The mate and the other crew members rushed over to help me up, I tried to stand but my right foot hurt so bad i fell back down. I didnt think it was so serious at the time, i thought maybe it was dislocated or something like that. But never the less i couldn’t walk so the crew got the ships streacher, and strapped me in. On this ship there wasnt any entrances on the main deck, so they had a choice between either getting one deck lower to the messroom or up one deck to the crew quarters. They decided to get me up a deck, and the captain thought it would be too difficult to take me up the stairs on deck, so he decided to hook the streacher to the crain and lift me up. The crew tied two ropes to each end of the streacher, so they could keep the streacher steady. I got safetly lifted up onto upper deck, and then carried into the hallway. There i was laying for awhile, while the captain and mate contacted the hospital. It took awhile before the captain came with the final plan, first they were hoping for a helicopter, then they were not sure that was neccessary. Before they could make their decision the mate wanted to see the foot, I was very reluctant to take off my boat, because I thought it was going to hurt like hell. But I maneged to slide it off without it hurting to bad. The foot was beginning to swell up, but did not look too bad. That is when the captain decided to sail to shore, we set course on Torshavn. Since it was a 7 hour trip we decided to get me into a bed, my quarters were one deck below, so that was not a option. One of the other deckhands offered me his room, and i slowly slided off the streacher and pulled myself into his room, where the crew helped me into bed. The trip was rather unevent full, the crew prepared the ship for crew change, while the captain checked upon me now and then. When we finally made it to harbour, an ambulance came and brought me to the hospital. I first got brought into the ER, where the doctors took a quick look before sending me to get an x-ray. Turns out my ankle is broken in two places, and I need an operation. I ended my day in a hospital bed waiting for surgery.
